CASTING OR TROLLING CRANKBAITS ON SHALLOW FLAT OR MID-DEPTH FLATS
When you're casting or trolling crankbaits on shallow or mid-depth flats, don't concentrate solely on the distinct dropoffs. Fish scatter across flats many times, either roaming for food or positioned at an ambush point. You have to cover a lot of ground to locate fish, but sometimes, that's exactly what you have to do.
DON'T JUST FIRE AWAY WHEN YOU'RE OUT CASTING CRANKBAITS
Make mental notes at all times of where your lure hit the water, so that you systematically cover new ground with each cast. If you bump cover, consider it a clue that you've found a potential hot spot, and put your lure "down that same path" at least twice. Through anglers catch more fish.
HIGH SPEED RETRIEVES?
High speed retrieves may trigger strikes at times, especially from salt water fish. But the pros tend to agree that more fish caught by changes in speed and direction than they are by sheer speed alone. Many Pro Anglers rarely if ever "burn" a crankbait fast. They prefer relatively slow-speed reels (about a 4.3 : 1 gear ratio), and usually maintain what they call a "medium pace," building in the strike-provoking action by pauses and jerks and changes in speed.
IMPORTANCE OF LURE COLOUR
Finding fish will always be the most important factor in your success. But don't downplay the important factor in your success. But don't downplay the importance of lure colour, In big-time bass tournaments, as an example, crankbait colour is almost always a significant factor by the the time the event is over. One colour usually produces better than others. Find the fish, but then make sure you give them what they want!
CATCH AND RELEASE
Catch and release works in most instances, and it's having a major impact on preserving the quality of fishing - especially for top-of-the-line predators like sebarau and toman. But don't ever feel guilty about keeping a few fish to eat. Catch and release was never meant to be an issue that divides the fishing community, and unless something drastic happens in the future, a meal of fresh-caught fish will always be one of the finer parts of any outing.
